Depression/Low Mood

cloud.png

One of our primitive survival responses is depression. Depression can lead us to fear anything and everything, can encourage us to avoid situations that feel scary and can keep us in a cycle of negativity and low mood.

Hypnotherapy can treat depression through rewiring the brain to put us back in control. It also improves sleep and emotional regulation.

When we sense threat, whether real or imagined, our amygdala is activated and we go into fight or flight. Our primitive brain takes over to keep us alive. A depressive response could mean that we live in worst case scenario, we avoid anything that feels too scary and we are generally quite negative.

As the mind can’t tell the difference between what’s real and what isn’t, if we’re thinking about something negatively it’s as if it’s real and happening now and the brain will react now.

Rewiring the brain allows us to be back in our intellectual brain where we live in the present instead of negatively forecasting the future or going over the past. In the intellectual brain we are positive and in control. We are therefore able to live without fear in the here and now.
